Coronary Artery Disease and Colon Cancer
Yet another reason to take care of your cardiovascular system. Preliminary studies conducted at the University of Hong Kong have found an increased risk of colorectal cancer and its precursors in people who have coronary artery disease (50% narrowing of a main artery).
- The prevalence of colorectal neoplasia was 30.3% in coronary artery disease patients versus 19.4% in patients without heart disease.
- 16.9% of the coronary artery disease patients had advanced lesions versus 6.7% of patients without coronary artery disease.
- Five colorectal cancers detected in the patients with coronary artery disease and none in patients who were free of heart disease.
If these results can be replicated and confirmed, screening for colorectal cancer will most likely be recommended for people with heart disease. In any case, current recommendations are for people over 50 years old to be screened for colon cancer regularly.
