Grand Rounds Vol 2 (35) at Parallel Universes

Dr. Emer is hosting this week’s Grand Rounds Vol 2 (35) in a medical journal format many of us are familiar with. Given the frequent mentions I’ve made over the past month about heart transplants, I thought this post at Shoe Money Tonight about organ donation was especially meaningful. (Although the mention of [...]

Heart Problems Related To Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

Two genes related to cardiac function has been found to be associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) - the caveolin-3 (CAV3) gene related to long QT syndrome and the cardiac ryanodine receptor (RyR2) gene involved in catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT).

TV Not Heart Friendly

Not that you don’t already know this but TV re-enforces our sedentary lifestyles. It also appears that TV slows us down even when we’re working out.
Three quarters of gym members schedule their work-outs to coincide with a television programme, according to a survey by the Leisure Connection chain. Watching TV while working out, the [...]

Heart-to-Heart #9: Cub Mommy

This week’s Heart-to-Heart is in honor of Cub Mommy’s father who died of heart failure at the age of 48.
He got better for awhile and then he had another incident. …So I am in his room telling him to fight it. Luckily he was stabilized and was doing better. He was taken back to St. [...]

Heart Condition Saturday: Restrictive Cardiomyopathy

This past week, I posted about little Karl Bielser, who’s waiting for a new heart and I thought I’d provide more information on his condition - restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Is fish good for the heart or not?

Fish is good for you. It’s low in fat and high in omega-3 fatty acids. Most studies have found a positive health benefit from eating fish but, occasionally, a study suggests something different. A recent study of 17,000 men has found that those who ate five or more servings of fish per [...]

Life on the Heart Transplant List: Karl Bielser

When I posted for the first time about life on the heart transplant list, I didn’t think I would have enough material to post on it so quickly again. But today I found a story about sixth-grader Karl Bielser who’s waiting for a heart transplant. Karl has restrictive cardiomyopathy in which the heart [...]

One Out of Five Emergency Defibrillators Unreliable

A couple of months ago, I posted about public defibrillators saving lives. While it’s true that emergency external defibrillators have saved thousands of lives, it’s also true that one in five units (about 164,000) sold in the past 10 years have been recalled or had an alert issued. A recent study also found [...]

National Women’s Health Week

I can’t resist the opportunity to promote National Women’s Health Week further especially because this banner is so wonderfully representative of ethnic diversity.
The tools to help you build a healthier life is a fantastic resource with a heart disease risk test that will provide more information on any areas where you might be [...]
