Life on the Heart Transplant List: Tony Talarico
Congratulations to Tony Talarico of the Saddle Lake area of Tunkhannock Township, Wyoming County, Pennsylvania! He received a heart transplant in May and is feeling better than he has since 1994 when he had a heart attack at the age of 34. Given 10 years to live with his old heart, he was put on the heart transplant list in April after years of feeling constantly tired with difficulty breathing. His heart had grown to three times its normal size.
This is how transplant staging worked for Tony:
First, a hospital medical team must vote on whether an individual’s critical situation makes him a good enough candidate for a heart transplant. Then, another team from the state of Ohio must determine that he is indeed in line to be at the top of the list. And then finally a national organ donor registry group must sign off that, “yes, the time is right.”
Tony now has a “young” heart and has been told that he may someday get to thank his donor’s family in person for the gift of a hearty life.
