Women More Likely To Die After Stroke and Heart Attack
More evidence that women are not the same as men, especially when it comes to surviving heart attacks and strokes. In a recent study based in Canada, researchers found that women who are hospitalized after a heart attack or stroke are 16 per cent more likely than men to die after a heart attack and 11 per cent more likely to die after a stroke.
The data suggest that gender plays a role in the quantity and quality of healthcare received:
- Men are more likely to be hospitalized than women after a heart attack or stroke.
- Men are also more likely to be cared for by a specialist — a cardiologist or a neurologist — than women.
- Women are less likely to get rehabilitation care.
If you’re a woman, you need to learn about the ways cardiovascular disease can affect you and be persistent whenever you need medical care. Obviously, you won’t be able to advocate for yourself after a severe heart attack or stroke so it’s vitally important that we educate everyone that women can be just as prone to heart disease as men.
