No Good Samaritans Help Heart Attack Victim

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on June 9th, 2006

Tom Avolio was taking a walk at Brady’s Run Park in Beaver Valley, Pennsylvania, when he suffered a heart attack. No one stopped to help him. By the time he was able to call for help on his own cell phone, his defibrillator had fired four times.

His wife, Sue Avolio, wrote to the Beaver County Times & Allegheny Times:

I want to thank Beaver County 9-1-1 and Medic Rescue for doing a wonderful job in getting Tom to the Medical Center. I want to thank the doctors and nurses there for the fine professional treatment he received.

I want to thank the people who were walking at the park that day - for nothing.

What would you do if someone asked you for help? I realize there are a lot of psychos around, but it takes nothing for you to call 911 for someone especially if they look as ill as Mr. Avolio must have. You don’t even have to stand around and wait with the person, you just have to call someone else for help.

Good thing Mr. Avolio is ok now. If you can afford a cell phone of your own, I’d recommend it but just keep in mind that it may be out of range at times just as Mr. Avolio’s was during his heart attack. Hopefully, a good samaritan will be near you then.
