Green Bay Packers President John Jones Has Heart Surgery
This news might not interest anyone except American football fans, but the Green Bay Packers president John Jones is resting at Bellin Hospital after open heart surgery Sunday. According to Packers CEO Bob Harlan:
This is someone who is in very good shape and works out all the time, watches what he eats and so forth. I guess it’s a warning to everybody, no matter how healthy you think you are.
What kind of warning is Mr. Harlan talking about? He couldn’t possibly mean that you might think you’re healthy, but you’re actually dying?! Well, that’s technically true. Or does he mean that any one of us–you, me, and the guy next door–can just keel over from heart disease at any moment no matter what kind of life you lead?
I suppose that’s true too. The effect of genetics and environment/lifestyle factors on our risk of disease can be difficult to predict. Our bodies are still renegades at times despite all that we do to rein them in. But, we can still do our best to avoid smoking, exercise, and eat right. And maybe Mr. Harlan also meant to say that we should all get regular cholesterol, blood pressure, glucose screening, etc. to live a healthy and hearty life. Can’t disagree with that either.
All the best to Mr. Jones for a speedy recovery!
