by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on June 29th, 2006

A recent Major League Baseball draft, Carson Kainer, will be receiving a kidney from his father sometime this summer. Born with chronic renal disease, he has only had one functional kidney since childhood. Carson’s remaining kidney function is now down to less than 13 percent.

How does kidney disease tie in with cardiovascular disease? It can cause high blood pressure, electrolyte imbalance leading to cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and high cholesterol. Conversely, cardiovascular disease can cause kidney disease as well.
