Hearty Habits #4: Healthy Routines
So far, the people who’ve been sharing their healthy habits with us have all been b5media bloggers and I’ve been enjoying the chance to learn more about them and their intimate daily routines. Today’s hearty habits come from Duncan Riley, blogger impresario and b5media Vice President of Operations.
- I cleanse and moisturise my face twice a day. A decent cleanser will work the same as shaving cream, so I use it as such. I’ll also give myself a face scrub once a week, and on occasion (say once every 2 weeks) a decent face mask as well. I’ve suffered in the past from psorasis, particularly on parts of my face, so I find that this “beauty” routine helps keep my skin in reasonable shape (although it will never be perfect…just that sort of skin). There are also a decent range now of male products as well, Nivea for Men comes to mind.
- I always mix my drinks with diet coke or sugar free orange juice (or other “diet” softdrinks). This cuts down on the calories :-). I also tend to drink lower calorie spirits as well (if I do drink them…which she who must be obeyed doesn’t like), for example Scotch and Vodka are much lower in calories then say Burbon and Rum. I also went through a stage where if I bought beer (and as much as I love beer, I don’t buy it that often) I only bought low calorie beer (Carlton LJ). The main reason I gave up drinking beer at home (except on a special occasion) is that it does make you fat. Within six months of giving up beer I lost maybe 15kg.
- Morning tablets: Barocca Performance for the Vitamin B boost…which also helps with my skin, as psorasis is exacerbated by a B12 deficincy..and a milk thistle tablet to make sure my liver is in good shape. If I’ve got a cold, or one of my family members has a cold, I always take Echinacea as well.
I’m impressed that Duncan is willing to go low-cal even on his drinks. That’s the one thing I find really hard to do. No matter how much I want to accept them, low calorie substitutes always seem second-rate to me. I may have to give them another try one of these days or just try to eat smaller portions. Neither seem like particularly attractive options!

Try crystal light for low cal drinks. Lots of flavors, zero calories, zero sodium, and pretty good I think.
