Cancer Drug Gleevec and Heart Failure
A small study of 10 patients who took the Novartis cancer drug Gleevec/Glivec for chronic myelogenous leukemia developed severe congestive heart failure between two and 14 months after starting treatment. The benefits of Gleevec still outweigh the side effects but doctors need to keep a close eye on cancer patients who may need supplementary heart treatment. If you’re taking Gleevec, you may want to bring this study to your doctor’s attention.
