64-slice Cardiac CT Scans

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on July 24th, 2006

Looking to avoid coronary angiography along with the catheter and dye involved? You may want to find out if a hospital near you has the newest 64-slice computed tomography (CT) scanner available. Not only would you be able to reduce your discomfort and risk of side effects, you’d be able to save several thousands of dollars too.

For those who have clogged coronary arteries, angiography is a lifesaver. But for those who are healthy, CT scans could be the more economical and safer way to go. About 500,000 people in the U.S. a year could avoid an angiography if they are first screened by CT scan.

Check out this amazing 3-D image of a normal heart and coronary arteries from a 64-slice CT scan from the University of Pennsylvania Health System. (Click the picture for a closer look.)
