Permanent Pacemakers Needed in Patients with Cervical Spinal Cord Injury
A study published in Cardiology in Review has found that transcutaneous/external pacemakers placed on top of the chest are not effective in patients with cervical (neck) spinal cord injury leading to quadriplegia. Patients with this type of injury often suffer from a dysregulation of the heart in which the heart rate falls to dangerously low levels also known as bradycardia. Instead of traditional methods of treatment with drugs and external pacemaker, these patients may require the a permanent pacemaker instead.
