Obesity Vaccine Against Ghrelin
There is a strong link between obesity and heart disease. Given the increasing problem of obesity across the globe (and “epidemic!” as some would say), obesity vaccines could be part of our future. Health conscious and plastic surgery happy accepting society would embrace it, treating the vaccine like the elixir of youth. Life and magazine covers would never be the same again.
You think I’m making this up, but I’m not. A recent study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences proposes vaccines to control the levels of some types of molecule that regulate energy balance. For example, rats vaccinated with ghrelin immunoconjugates (ghrelin is involved in hunger signals) ate the same amount but had less body fat and did not gain as much weight.
Of course, rats don’t have the emotional baggage that comes along with overeating and dieting. It remains to be seen whether an anti-ghrelin vaccine would be effective in humans or not.
Would you consider getting vaccinated for obesity?
