New Orleans: Future Heart Disease Capital of the World

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on August 29th, 2006

One year after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, doctors are warning that the healthcare system is not capable of taking care of local citizens. Primary care is lacking and rates of depression are increasing.

As bad as it is right now, the real crisis will come if the city can’t resolve the post-Katrina lack of primary care and rising depression. “In five years, we’ll be the stroke capital of the world, the heart disease capital of the world,” warns [cardiologist Pat] DeBlieux. “We’re going to see long-range complications from diabetes and heart disease and stress because people are neglecting primary care now.”

It’s worth keeping in mind that both buildings and people need repair after a disaster.
