Dear Doctor #5: Happy Feet

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on October 31st, 2006

Today, the multi-talented Cyndi of Layers Upon Layers is limping in with her Dear Doctor letter.

Dear Doctor,

How come when I came in with pinched nerves in my feet from marathoning, you suggest surgery to me but won’t discuss orthotic inserts for my running shoes? How come you’re so willing to cut into my flesh for thousands of dollars and months of lost time in my training, but you won’t even consider talking about alternatives.

Oh, see, now I understand. It’s because surgery is covered by the HMO you work for and orthotics aren’t. If I go get orthotics, your HMO won’t get a dime.

I did the research myself. I paid for the appointments and the orthotics myself. They work great. Thanks for nothing.

Your grateful patient,
Cyndi

PS Slightly off topic, but I just saw the trailer for Happy Feet and it was hilarious.
