Halloween Grand Rounds at Doctor Hebert’s Medical Jumbo
Dr. Michael C. Hebert has woven this week’s Grand Rounds collection of medical and health posts into a spooky poetic tale. Very impressive!
While I was visiting the participants’ haunts, I found this Parade Magazine article at GruntDoc:
For anything that might be life-threatening—a wound spurting blood, chest pains—call an ambulance. In true emergencies—or even suspected emergencies—don’t delay. Just be smart: “You want the professionals involved,” Kellermann says. “The worst place to have a cardiac arrest is the backseat of a car. It’s much better to have one in the back of an ambulance.” Also, you’ll typically receive faster treatment at the ER when you arrive via ambulance.
If you arrive on your own, tell the intake clerk or the triage nurse everything. The emergency room is no place for stoicism. Dr. Joel Cohen, an expert on emergency medicine who wrote ER: Enter at Your Own Risk, gives this example: If you wake up in a cold sweat with a debilitating pain in your left shoulder and difficulty breathing, don’t tell the nurse, “My shoulder hurts.” You’ll be triaged to the bottom of the waiting list. Explain all your symptoms, and the staff will recognize that you might be having a heart attack.
Another piece of advice is to have a copy of your EKG if you’re a heart patient so you have a baseline for the physician treating you in an emergency.
