Student Stabbed in the Heart with a Comb

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on November 23rd, 2006

CRICKET Professional Carbon 4C Rattail Comb (Model: C50)A 12-year-old girl in Kenosha, Wisconsin stabbed a classmate in the heart with a rattail comb on Monday. The victim had a 4- to 5-inch piece of metal embedded in her chest that required surgery to remove. What’s worse, the stabbing occurred in the morning but the victim didn’t realize she’d been stabbed until that night. She’d walked around all day thinking she’d been punched instead. I may start walking around wearing a chest protector from now on.

Update: The 12-year-old attacker has been sentenced to two years in a juvenile prison.

If you have very thin, fine hair, you might want to enlist the help of a hairdresser, but other than that, all you need is a rat-tail comb (be careful with that!), and some clips to hold your hair out of the way. Very easy stuff. One caveat: Do NOT sleep in them, or your hair will get so tangled up in the combs that you will have to cut them out. Ouch. The details of applying them vary a little bit between brands, so I will leave that for later. […]

[…] One year ago this month, A Hearty Life was born. Since then, I have written 552 posts talking about the heart and the strange and wonderful things we humans do to it. Strange because it seems that more people than I ever thought get stabbed in the heart every day, including Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. Wonderful because cardiovascular medicine has advanced steadily over the years, such as the use of statins, stents, and advanced imaging. […]
