Canadian Red Cross First Aid Quiz

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on November 26th, 2006

November is CPR Month 2006 and the Canadian Red Cross has a First Aid Quiz. I got one wrong (below the fold), what about you?

NB: While browsing the American Red Cross site, I came across this great story about Barbara Campbell and Judy Metz. When CPR trainer Barbara collapsed at Pelham High School where she’s the school nurse, it was her colleague and CPR student Judy who performed CPR on Barbara and saved her life.

When a conscious adult is choking and can not cough or speak, you should?

Your answer : Give a firm blow between the shoulder blades : Incorrect!
The right answer is : Perform abdominal thrusts

Severe choking is when someone cannot cough or speak. You should perform abdominal thrusts. You should never hit an adult on the back or give them something to drink; it could make the object more difficult to remove. Abdominal thrusts, when used correctly, will force air from the lungs to push the object out, like a cork from a champagne bottle.
