Greg Page Wiggle and Orthostatic Intolerance

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on November 30th, 2006

The Wiggles - Wiggle TimeIf you’re a parent, today’s news will sadden you. Greg Page, the yellow Wiggle, has confirmed that he is leaving the ultra-popular children’s group, The Wiggles, because he is suffering from orthostatic intolerance. Greg is in his mid-30’s which is the age group most commonly affected by this debilitating disease:

  • Inability of the body to compensate for the effect of gravity on circulation
  • An abnormal increase in heart rate when changing body positions.
  • The cardiovascular system needs to strain in order to maintain blood pressure and blood flow to the brain
  • Disruption to the general cardiovascular system leading to extreme fatigue, irregular heart beat, migraines, vision problems, and many other disabilities

It’s amazing Greg has been able to tolerate such an active lifestyle as being part of The Wiggles. Hopefully he’ll have the chance to rest and recuperate. We wish him all the best for a long hearty life.

More from Play Library.

[...] Greg suffers from orthostatic intolerance, which makes it virtually impossible for him to conduct a normal, active life. What a sad, sad day. [...]

[...] Over at my other blog, Play Library, we’re having a Greg Page Wiggle Tribute Day in honor of the yellow Wiggle who officially announced his retirement because he has a chronic condition called orthostatic intolerance (OI). News reports have mentioned that the condition is partly genetic so I thought I’d look it up (of course!). [...]

Oh, that’s so sad! We have lots of their songs, and the King of Everything likes to watch the show when we’re around a working TV. Thinking selfishly, I’m glad he’s not a fanatic, or he’d be heartbroken.

    Sigh.

Amazing, yes, that the man’s been able to be so active with such a condition. What a hero.

[...] I’m in no way trying to make light of what is a serious condition for Greg, but am I the only one who breathed a big sigh of relief that his condition isn’t fatal? Greg Page has given so much of his life, as have all of the Wiggles family, to the children of the world. And while it’s saddening that we’ll no longer have him as the yellow Wiggle (except in every video, TV show, etc. that’s already been produced), I’m so glad that his family can look forward to a long life with Greg. For 15 years they’ve shared him with all of The Wiggles fans. I think I speak for so many people when I say that we are thankful to both Greg and his family for allowing us that part of his life. Our hopes and prayers are for a long, healthy life ahead of him (he is still so young!), excellent healthcare for his condition, and a continued joy-filled life. [...]

[...] I know this isn’t a popular subject, but I sometimes turn the TV on to let my daughter be entertained while I try to get something done.  She loves to dance so the Wiggles is the perfect babysitter for a few minutes.  However I just heard from Play Library that Greg Page is having to retire from the Wiggles due to a medical condition called Orthostatic Intolerance, a blood pressure disorder.   How sad to know that he has performed his last “Hot Potato” for the kids.  [...]

[...] Hsien mentioned earlier that Greg Page is not only known as the (now former) yellow Wiggle, but that he has had success as a solo artist as well. The album mentioned earlier is performed by Greg Page and the TCB Band, which was Elvis Presley’s band. Apparently, Greg is the first Australian to perform and record with TCB. [...]

[...] My son will be heartbroken. The Wiggles are a staple in his insatiable quest for music. Read more about it here. I knew that they were doing a lot of cartoonish episodes with no real people dancing on screen…and they were also substituting the group being on stage for their little happy dancing assistants to get some air time, but I had no clue it might be from orthostatic intolerance. I figured they were just getting older and didn’t feel the need to show their faces as much. I hope that Greg gets better. He was the lead singer. [...]

[...] Such people are much like all those parents who cannot watch Barney anymore now that the kids they are used  to have grown up. My own such phenomenon is Gregg from The Wiggles, who is actually not doing so well. For others, it is director Steve Jackson and the coming film to be based on The Hobbit (although that may be to the good and serve as a useful counter-example, since the Hobbit was written for, or at least evolved from being told to, a kindergartener, shortly after this one, and Jackson is a little too scary and insufficiently playful) of Steve Martin substituting for Spencer Tracy in Father of the Bride and Father’s (would’ve alliterated more as Daddy’s) Little Dividend, renamed Father of the Bride II, and for whomever plus Myrna Loy in Cheaper by the Dozen. I have grown to love the wiggles very much. I love sam, he is a great singer, he is a good choice to replace greg. Greg will be missed. He is my favoret wiggle. I heard today that one of the wiggles died. I thought of Greg, but I went on line and couldn’t find anything. Can you help me? Did one of the wiggles die?
