New York City Bans Trans Fats

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on December 6th, 2006

Schwan's Breaded Onion RingsPut down those onion rings! You could be eating a banned substance - TRANS FATS.

It’s official. New York City has banned the use of trans fats at restaurants. If you don’t already know (and you should), trans fatty acids are believed to increase LDL (bad) cholesterol and decrease HDL (good) cholesterol. This imbalance increases the risk of clogged arteries and other symptoms of cardiovascular disease.

David Letterman has the solution for you trans fatty acid addicts:

I feel like every day I’m paying the price. Do you kind of feel that way, you’re paying the price of being alive today? Listen to this, you’re not going to believe what happened. Arby’s, the roast beef people, they’re going to remove the trans fat from all their products. You go to Arby’s now, you can’t get any sandwich with a trans fat. So here’s what I do: I always take along my own little bottle of trans fat.

Get your can of trans fats here! Just $2.55 a pop.

It’s not just New York. Chicago, and some Scandanavian country are banning them. What’s scary is that trans fats were used in the manufacture of most of the foodstuffs that we pick up in supermarket shelves. I understand that everything from cookies to chips to all the fried stuff are prepared with trans fats. What are the healthy alternatives?

I read somewhere in http://www.palmoiltruthfoundation.com that natural palm oil is probably the one of the best kept secrets as a healthy alternative to trans fats. It is neutral in taste, all natural, and rich in vitamins E, coenzyme Q10, and many other healthy alternatives.

    What do you guys think?
