by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on December 30th, 2006

aha

The numbers are in. More than one-third of all deaths in the United States in 2004 were caused by cardiovascular disease: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure and congenital cardiovascular defects.

  • For CVD deaths as a whole, Minnesota had the lowest death rate and Mississippi had the highest.
  • For coronary heart disease deaths, Hawaii has the lowest rate, while Oklahoma had the highest.
  • For stroke deaths, New York had the lowest.
  • Twice as many angioplasties, bypass surgery, open-heart surgeries, and pacemakers implants are performed in the South as compared to all others.

More specifics at the American Heart Association.
