The numbers are in. More than one-third of all deaths in the United States in 2004 were caused by cardiovascular disease: heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, heart failure and congenital cardiovascular defects.

For CVD deaths as a whole, Minnesota had the lowest death rate and Mississippi had the highest.

For coronary heart disease deaths, Hawaii has the lowest rate, while Oklahoma had the highest.

For stroke deaths, New York had the lowest.

Twice as many angioplasties, bypass surgery, open-heart surgeries, and pacemakers implants are performed in the South as compared to all others.
