Men Have Heart Disease Too

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on January 22nd, 2007

Laura Bush Talking Action FigureCarey Roberts of The American Daily, a conservative opinion site, wishes people would remember that heart disease affects both men and women. He’s particularly offended that First Lady Laura Bush chose not to mention men at all in the past four years she’s been involved in raising awareness about heart disease, especially because he’s lost three friends to the disease. Here’s what Carey would like every American to know:

  1. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.
  2. Men die from heart disease at a much younger age than women, which deprives children of the guiding hand of a father figure, and later places wives at far greater risk of institutionalization.
  3. Heart disease is often preventable through a combination of not smoking, low-fat diets, and exercise.

It’s all true except the bit about wives at greater risk of institutionalization if their husband dies of heart disease. I don’t understand that at all. Maybe it’s some kind of conservative joke?!

Institutionalization? Think nursing home, not mental illness. If your husband dies from heart disease, that’s one less option for long-term care if you aren’t able to care for yourself in your “golden years”

Judy: Ooooh. Thank goodness you came and explained it to me! My first thought was mental health related and I thought he was making a stab at how dependent women are on their men. I’ve already told my husband he can put me in a nursing home if he finds wiping my butt too onerous. :P I honestly feel scared of aging. :(
