Thanks to Angelo of NBA Obsessed, I learned about former Celtic player Dennis Johnson’s death yesterday. Johnson was 52-years-old and had no symptoms prior to collapsing. He had just finished coaching Boston’s NBA Development League affiliate, the Austin Toros, and was chatting, joking, and laughing with spokeswoman Perri Travillion when he suddenly collapsed. He never [...]

Earlier this week, I was intrigued by a story in the St. Paul Pioneer Press about the naming of cardiac stents. Diane Prange at the Strategic Name Development Product Naming Blog has more about the history and process of selecting names for cardiac stents. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the logic of naming one of [...]

Even with no other heart disease risk factors, women with high total cholesterol are at an increased risk of having ischemic stroke. Latest results from the Women’s Health Study published in Neurology show that women with the highest quintile of total cholesterol are at more than twice the stroke risk of those with the lowest [...]

Web entrepreneur and former AOL VP Jason Calacanis is on a mission and it has nothing to do with making money off the Internet. He’s started a fatblogging movement to lose weight. His letter to Scott Heiferman yesterday was both sad and thought-provoking:

In the National Geographic’s heart feature this month, I was really astounded that the doctors featured took statins as a preventive measure against heart disease. In the UK, there is some discussion of making simvastatin widely available to the two thirds of Brits who would qualify as having cholesterol levels high enough to medicate. Nigel [...]

How do you think those fancy cardiac stents got their name? Christopher Snowbeck of the St. Paul Pioneer Press investigated and found that stents were originally named for their inventors then the names were chosen so they’d strike the fancy of the physicians who implanted them. Names must also be “easy to pronounce, easy to [...]

Kurtis Kehler’s son underwent open-heart surgery at just 10 days old. It has put tremendous emotional and financial strain on their family.
Name a job you can actually do when your baby is in the hospital getting open-heart surgery. It was hard for us to even sleep, let alone eat and cope.
The Congenital Heart Information Network [...]
