Students Risk Heart Damage from Dexedrine Use

by Hsien-Hsien Lei, PhD on April 5th, 2007

Schwan-Stabilo Highlighter, Chisel Tip, Yellow Ink SWS48891Hard work, good study habits, and smarts aren’t enough to get some students good grades in school. Some turn to amphetamine-based drugs for ADHD like Dexedrine for increased energy, mental acuity, and a high. At recommended doses, the risk of heart damage is low although in 2006, the FDA recommended a black box warning for “sudden death and serious cardiovascular events.”

Quotes from students who’ve used Dexedrine:

  • You can just take a bunch of Dexedrine in the morning, and then you can sit in the library for up to 16 hours without getting tired, and it helps you focus too—fewer distractions.
  • You can get used to it. Once you experience the relative ease of studying with Dexedrine, it’s hard to study without. It’s like, why would you put in the extra effort when you can just cram in one night with Dexedrine and achieve the same results?
  • I did not move; I sat there for four hours and actually enjoyed doing work.

Other types of “study drugs” include those prescribed for narcolepsy and depression. In addition to Dexedrine, students abuse Adderall, Concerta, and Ritalin to help them perform. Along with the “benefits” (although I have to wonder how well these students actually do in school compared to those who put in the work sans drugs), there are major health concerns that include elevated blood pressure, blood glucose, irregular heartrate, heart failure, or seizures. The New York University Student Health Center has more on study drugs.

Here’s a video report of college students using Adderall although they seem more concerned with cheating than with serious health effects. Get your priorities straight!
