“Bluetooth” Type Device Can Warn Hospitals Of Potential Heart Attack Patients
Are you sitting down? I have one for you. I actually had to read through it twice because I just can’t believe how far technology has come even in my short thirty something years. There is now a device that can be linked to your cell phone that can text message an alert to a local hospital, warning staff that the patient is about to suffer a heart attack.
The prototype Bluetooth heart monitor periodically records an electrocardiogram (ECG) of the wearer’s heart and transmits the information via radio frequency signals to his or her modified mobile phone. If signs of imminent heart failure are detected, the phone analyzes the ECG signal and sends a message via the SMS text service to the nearest medical center.
Oh my goodness… Is this not really cool? The device was designed to give patients that have already experienced a heart attack the peace of mind and psychological well being while they proceed forward with everyday life. It is mobile and will allow you to be totally independent.
The researchers are currently working to integrate global-positioning system (GPS) technology for the phone, so any medical center can quickly pinpoint the patient in need. This will increase the chance of survival for the patients that choose to use this wearable device. I get so excited! Technology is beautiful.

That’s pretty cool! Did you see anything that mentioned how much it costs? Or if insurance will pay for it? I wonder if they will ever have people at high risk of a heart attack, but haven’t had one yet, use it.

Hey Trisha,
No they didn’t mention $$$ or insurance, but I would guess it to be fairly expensive in the beginning stages and then just like everything else tech, the price will come down. It is pretty neat though, I will be curious to see how often it is used. :)

You’re probably right, however much it costs, the price will probably go down quite a bit after a while. I’m hoping the iphone price will go down too!
