Obesity Rates Continue To Climb In The US, So Does Heart Disease

by Kendra James, RN on August 27th, 2007

Obesity rates in the US continue to go up, up, up! And we all know what that means. So will all the medical conditions and diseases that accompany obesity. High blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes to name a few.

So, what states topped the list? By the way, this is not the list to be bragging about! Anyway, Mississippi has won the gold on this one. They are now considered the most obese state in the US with over 30% of persons meeting the criteria. Alabama and West Virginia took second and third place. Colorado is the leanest state with only 17%.

Childhood obesity was also measured and District of Columbia weighed in with over 20% of their children overweight. The leanest children in the US can be found in Utah. If you care to read more about how childhood obesity can prove to be fatal, check out what I had to say at Diabetes Notes today. Boy, I guess I am on a roll!

The children of the 21 st. cen. will be the first generation who will die younger than their parents and /or grandparents. I encourage my children to log out and power down go outside and play.

I think now and days that parnets are so busy doing other things that by the end of the day parents don’t really care what their food their children take in, and most probably aren’t aroud to teach their children on what is healthy and what is not.

Jesse- You are very right! I was actually just discussing that with my father over the weekend and he didn’t believe me. I just don’t get it though, we have so much more knowledge and resources, I honestly think it comes down to economics. The cost of living has increased so dramatically and annual salaries haven’t exactly caught up. And then there is the laziness thing! Have a good day! K:)

Linda- Good point. It is draining but 10 minutes here and there… I am not naive and I do understand, I just think there has to be a way around the “I don’t have time” excuse. I guess if I had the answer I would be one very wealthy lady! Thanks for your thoughts! :) K
