Our Children’s Blood Pressure Really Worries Me!

by Kendra James, RN on December 15th, 2007

I’m not gonna lie to ya! I’ve got nothing tonight. I have been searching and searching for news worthy, exciting, groundbreaking information or research and have yet to find anything so I will share a little something that I have been observing a lot of lately.

childrens-blood-pressure.jpgHigh blood pressure among our children… Working in an urgent care facility, I see every single age group and demographic every single time I work. But I am getting very bothered by the number of children whose blood pressure is alarmingly high! I mean like 152/96 and 146/94. That is no joke high!! What will happen to these children if there are no changes made?

And I know that this is not very clinical and exactly factual, but most of these kids are overweight. Before you write a comment saying that I shouldn’t make generalizations, remember that I said it was a very broad statement and observation, and I said the word MOST.

Have you come across this? Have you heard anything first hand? Is your child’s blood pressure normal? Do you worry about heart disease among your children?

I think that problems like this come from the “you’re young, don’t worry about it” attitude that everyone seems to have about children’s health. When do you suddenly reach that magic age where your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, etc are worth worrying about? If you grow up eating anything you want etc and aren’t educated about these things it isn’t like you can suddenly change everything you’re used to just because you hit a certain birthday.

Absolutely Cozmo. I agree. It is important to teach our youth what is healthy and what can cause issues down the road. I always make sure i stress the importance of teaching and explaining things to children, many parents that I speak with just tell their kids but don’t talk WITH them, but I guess that is another ball of wax…
