Congenital Heart Defects More Prevalent Among IVF Twins

by Kendra James, RN on February 3rd, 2008

This will definitely come more into play as we develop science further and so many continue to fight infertility…

“We found that twin pregnancies conceived through IVF have a higher prevalence of CHD than singletons,” said Bahtiyar, who saw a three-fold increase. “IVF twins are usually fraternal, but past studies of identical twins also showed up to a 13-fold increase in congenital heart defects.”

Dr. Mert Ozan Bahtiyar and his colleagues along with the Fetal Cardiovascular Center at Yale University and Yale-New Haven Hospital, examined 2000 patients for the study. His conclusion is that it is the multiple pregnancies that commonly result from the IVF and not the IVF itself per se. The next step is to figure out why it happens. I see more to come on this in the near future.
