Cardiac Interventionists put their eyes at risk…

by Kendra James, RN on August 31st, 2008

These are the things that you do not think about when speaking of cardiac surgery. Doctors performing heart surgery are at risk during cardiac procedures and also face health risks, namely to their eyes.

The International Atomic Energy Agency is helping the medical community to address this problem through a major international initiative aimed at training cardiologists and other medical professionals in radiation protection.

What is one of the highest concerns? Lengthy angioplasty and other cardiac interventions performed under X-ray fluoroscopic guidance.  Have you ever thought about this? Interesting, no?
